Plot summary
Wei is the only daughter of Liu, a medical researcher in China who tests on himself a serum meant to regrow human skin tissue instantly and make skin grafts simpler to perform. Wei continues the work from his incomplete notes after his death. A distant aunt, Ling, brings her to New Zealand, where she enrolls at a university. Her cousin Angela, who goes by Angie, and Angie's friends treat her badly, and her only comfort is John, a disfigured homeless man. Her chemistry professor, Paul, sees that her father's work could protect a grant of his and takes her on as a research assistant, but the notes contain a flaw that keeps the new skin from binding, and he dismisses her.
