Plot summary
Evie Harris, a washed-up and aging actress, shares a tacky out-of-style bungalow with Coco, a lonely spinster who pines for a doctor she met years ago. Evie's long career runs from vaudeville to television, including a holiday special called Christmas Evie. Their new roommate is Varla Simonds, the starry-eyed daughter of Evie's late rival Marla Simonds, and Evie turns fiercely competitive around her. Evie also notices the chemistry building between Varla and her son Stevie, a lawyer who chases ambulances. Coco tries to keep the peace while Varla's career takes off with a part in the Bizzy Gal dinners commercials, and Evie's jealousy of the younger woman grows.

- Girls Will Be Girls grew out of a drag event benefit co-hosted by its stars Clinton Leupp and Jack Plotnick, which was such a hit that the pair created the show, built on the formula Leupp described in a 2008 interview: Varla makes Evie crazy, Evie acts out and ends up hurting Coco.
- According to co-star Clinton Leupp, Richard Day had originally written Girls Will Be Girls as a situation comedy for Showtime, but the network passed on it at the last minute, so it was made as a film hoping the new gay networks would be interested.
- A sequel, Girls Will Be Girls 2012, was filmed in 2012 and funded by a Kickstarter campaign, but writer-director Richard Day's 2015 cancer diagnosis delayed production, and in 2016 Coco Peru and Varla Jean Merman said only that it would be released "eventually."
