Plot summary
An aging writer with a Falangist past, Luis Forest has retired to a large house in the coastal town of Sitges, where he works on his memoirs, broods over his failed marriage and lives with his dog and a housekeeper, troubled by his own political past under Franco. His niece Mariana turns up unannounced, saying she wants to interview him about the autobiography for the magazine where she works with her aunt Soledad, his estranged wife. She brings Elmyr, a silent photographer friend. The two argue, smoke drugs and unsettle the routine of the household. Mariana offers to type the manuscript, and the pair stay on.

- Vicente Aranda wanted to film the Spanish Civil War but the cost was too high, so he turned instead to Catalan author Juan Marsé's novel, a controversial 1979 Premio Planeta winner billed as the Spanish Booker Prize; he filmed his war project years later as Libertarias.
