Plot summary
New Year's Eve finds Jenny, Marty and Chrissy on a snowmobiling outing in the Rocky Mountains. After a word with a storekeeper at a ski shop, they set off before dark and a blizzard overtakes them. A hotel stands above the snow trail, cut off from the ski area, and they take shelter inside. The heating works, but no lights do. When night comes they build a fire, trade stories and remember old times. Marty walks into the kitchen and finds an old woman, brash and wary of intruders. She lives in the hotel, she tells them, with two sons the visitors never see, and she puts them up in rooms.

- Makichuk's original plan was a much longer ending for Ghostkeeper, with an extended chase sequence in which Spier and the Wendigo creature ran across the rooftop of the Deer Lodge hotel; the depleted budget killed it.
- The Deer Lodge Hotel in Banff, Alberta served as the film's primary shooting location, an arrangement made possible by screenwriter Doug MacLeod, who had previously worked at the hotel.
- Paul Zaza scored Ghostkeeper in a single weekend, recycling musical cues and themes he had also used in the Canadian slasher film Prom Night (1980).
- The film's monster was drawn from the Native American Wendigo legend, a cannibalistic spirit that possessed humans and roamed the wilderness in search of human flesh.
