Plot summary
The steam yacht Cyclops comes with a history: Professor Martineau, an atomic scientist, sailed it for Deauville after the war and never arrived, and the vessel was later found deserted, one lifebuoy missing and no distress signals sent. Newlyweds Guy and Margaret Thornton buy it anyway, warned by the yard manager that it may be haunted. Guy suspects smuggling rather than ghosts, and they start an overhaul, hiring Mansel as deckhand. At their housewarming party a guest smells a cigar, and the engineer quits soon after. Margaret complains of cigar smoke in their quarters and hears only breathing on the bridge telephone. Guy stays doubtful after glimpsing a smoking figure in the engine room, so Margaret engages the paranormal investigator Dr. Fawcett.
