Plot summary
Ray Gleason, an ex-con who designs cakes in a San Francisco bakery, is putting together a rare-coin heist with two accomplices, Bobby and Carl, when his son Timmy arrives at his apartment. Timmy has lived with Ray's sister Kitty since his mother's death. Kitty has just married Wayne and left for her honeymoon, so the boy is staying with a father who mostly ignores him. Timmy wants Ray's time; Ray wants the robbery to go well. Once the coins are in hand, Timmy hides them and names his price: he will give them back only if Ray takes him fishing, to miniature golf and to an amusement park and treats him like a son.

- Macaulay Culkin's character was meant to have a short haircut, but the actor had grown his hair out and liked it. His father Kit Culkin insisted he keep it, arguing that the boy he played was working class rather than a clean-cut prep school type, and the long hair stayed.
