Plot summary
Nancy Drew is an amateur detective, and her father Carson, a widower, takes a temporary job in California, so the two leave River Heights. Carson wants his daughter to spend her time as an ordinary teenager instead of chasing cases. She chose their California house because it is tied to Dehlia Draycott, a movie star whose death was never solved. At her new school she struggles to fit in, wearing 1950s outfits, and befriends a younger boy, Corky. Corky's older sister Inga and Inga's friend Trish tease her. Her friend Ned Nickerson visits from River Heights for her birthday, and Corky grows jealous of him. Nancy keeps finding clues in the Draycott case and investigates without telling her father.
