Plot summary
Ernest P. Worrell keeps the floors clean at night at the Howard County Bank and Trust while hoping to move up to a clerk's job, a hope that co-worker Charlotte Sparrow takes up over dinner and that bank president Oscar Pendlesmythe does not share. A mishap with a floor polisher magnetizes Ernest and leaves the bank in a mess. A jury duty summons then brings him to the trial of convict Rubin Bartlett, who sees that Ernest is the double of Felix Nash, a death row inmate at Dracup State Penitentiary. The defense attorney arranges a jury tour of the prison, and there Nash and his hulking companion Lyle force Ernest to trade places with him, while the guards will not hear that his name is not Nash.
