Plot summary
Their friendship begins at a Los Angeles bus stop, where Bonnie, 14, and Hillary, 15, meet one morning. They spend the day wandering the city together, strolling the streets, chucking rocks from an overpass bridge onto the highway below, running rampant through shopping malls and playing video games. Their stream of careless chatter turns to confession. Hillary says her father is serving a prison term for raping her. Bonnie tells of a time her joking with her brother turned into intercourse, something she has kept to herself. As the day goes on, their talk and their play slide toward rage and violence.

- The film is based on a play by James Bosley, which drew on a real 1983 murder in Auburn, California, committed by 14-year-old Shirley Wolf and 15-year-old Cindy Collier. The title comes from Wolf's diary entry: "Today, Cindy and I ran away and killed an old lady. It was lots of fun."
- The film separates its two timelines by image: the girls' relationship is shown in color flashbacks, while their time in a juvenile detention center is shot in black and white.
