Plot summary
A train accident leaves St. James's hospital full, so the pediatric patients of the older Mercy Falls cannot be moved and its ward stays open a while longer. Amy Nicholls arrives as the new night nurse, replacing Susan, and meets the children in the care of Helen Perez, among them Maggie, an orphan with severe cystic fibrosis. Maggie uses letter blocks to talk with a girl she calls Charlotte, who she says lives upstairs in an abandoned ward. Simon, another patient, wakes with a broken femur and tells Amy that Charlotte did it. Roy, the operations manager, calls Charlotte an urban legend.
