Plot summary
In Santa Maria, New Mexico, Ross McEwen, a cowboy down on his luck, asks banker Frenger for a $2,000 loan. When Frenger asks about security, McEwen shows him a six-gun, and the banker hands over the cash for an I.O.U. signed Jefferson Davis. Frenger posts a $3,000 reward, dead or alive, and the new marshal, Pat Garrett, warns bounty hunters against shooting a man in the back. Before McEwen can board a train out of town, a rattlesnake bites him. Aboard, a passenger named Fay Hollister, a nurse, tends the wound. A posse stops and searches the train. Flooding has washed out the tracks near Albuquerque, so the travelers continue by a mail route.
