Plot summary
Forrest Gump grows up in Greenbow, Alabama, where his mother runs a boarding house and he is fitted with leg braces for a curved spine. On his first day of school he befriends Jenny Curran, and his devotion to her lasts the rest of his life. When bullies chase him, the braces come off and he runs faster than most people. That speed earns him a football scholarship to the University of Alabama, a place on the All-America team, and a meeting with President John F. Kennedy at the White House. After college he enlists in the Army, where Benjamin Buford Blue, called Bubba, talks him into going into the shrimping business once their service is over. The two are sent to Vietnam.

- Tom Hanks signed on to play Forrest Gump after only ninety minutes of reading the script, dropping out of the role of Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption to take it.
- David Alan Grier, Ice Cube and Dave Chappelle all turned down the role of Bubba; Chappelle, who believed the film would flop, later said he regretted it, and Hanks made up for it by casting him in You've Got Mail.
- To digitally erase Gary Sinise's legs after his character's amputation, the crew wrapped his real legs in blue fabric so a 'roto-paint' team could paint them out of every single frame of film by hand.
- With the budget exhausted, the studio was about to shut the production down until director Robert Zemeckis and Tom Hanks paid for the film's famous cross-country running sequence out of their own pockets.
- Novelist Winston Groom was contracted for 3 percent of the film's net profits but received nothing once it became a hit, because Paramount's accounting maintained the blockbuster had technically not shown a profit.
- The Lincoln Memorial peace-rally crowd was faked from just 1,500 extras filmed over two days, repositioned into different sections between takes and then multiplied by computer into a crowd of several hundred thousand people.
- A stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Grandfather Mountain, used for Forrest's cross-country running scenes, became so identified with the film that part of the road is now known as 'Forrest Gump Curve.'
