Plot summary
The farm Junior and his wife Hen work has belonged to his family for generations. One night Terrance turns up at their door and says he comes from OuterMore, an aerospace corporation. Terrance informs Junior that he has been drafted to serve aboard the Installation, a station in orbit around Earth, for about two years. Junior dislikes the thought of leaving Hen by herself, though he looks after her and takes comfort in the routines of their days together. Terrance explains that while Junior is gone, a biomechanical duplicate of him will keep Hen company. Junior is appalled, but he has no choice, because all those selected are required to go. Terrance then begins calling at the farm often, interviewing Junior to gather what he needs to configure the duplicate.
