Plot summary
Ten years ago David Kressen, a child prodigy with degrees in mechanical and computer engineering, vanished from view. Simon Castle, the billionaire who founded Kestrel Computing, had offered him a place at Workspace 18, one of the investments Castle makes in high-level scientists. There David has worked ever since on Adam, an artificial intelligence that cannot be told apart from a person. Joy Andrews arrives for a week of interviews with the pair. She starts out watching Adam with curiosity, and the robot appears to answer her presence. David, at first arrogant in her eyes, shows himself to be naive, and their friendship deepens into something else.
