Plot summary
At a Thanksgiving dinner, Henry and Rose Tooms and their teenage daughter Kimberly each name something they are grateful for. Nearly a year has passed since then, and Rose's murder remains unsolved. Henry spends his time renovating the family home, and Kimberly has not gone outside since the killing because agoraphobia keeps her indoors. She takes medication, joins an online agoraphobia support group, and receives visits at home from Dr. Helen Saunders, a therapist who finds her progress too slow. For her seventeenth birthday her father gives her a necklace that bears a charm. When a television news report covers a teenage girl who has recently been abducted, Kimberly sees that the girl is wearing a charm just like hers.
