Plot summary
Flatland is a two-dimensional world of polygons, and its people are three days from celebrating the year 3000. A Square, an attorney at law, is trying to teach his son A Hexagon the art of sight recognition when his brother B, a clerk in President Circle's office, urges him to stay home during a Senate meeting. That session takes up the escalating hostility pitting the government against Senator Chromatistes and his Chromatist movement, which wants Flatlanders free to color themselves as they please. Ignoring the warning, A Square keeps an appointment with a new client, the first woman charged as a Chromatist, and on the way home he is caught in the riot that starts at the Senate. He barricades his family in the house, and then A Sphere appears.
