Plot summary
Yoshitaka Nishi was a police detective until an arrest went wrong. The suspect shot one officer, Tanaka, dead, and badly injured two others, Nakamura and Horibe. Horibe now uses a wheelchair; his wife and daughter have gone, and he talks about ending his life and about wanting to paint, though he cannot afford the materials. Nishi lives with Miyuki, his wife, who has terminal leukemia. To pay for her care he borrowed from a yakuza loan shark and is struggling to repay. Grief over the death of the couple's young child and guilt over the arrest stay with him as he searches for a way to give Miyuki what time remains.

- The pointillist paintings made by the paralyzed detective Horibe in Hana-bi were painted by director Takeshi Kitano himself, while he was recovering from an infamous August 1994 motorcycle accident that left half of his face paralyzed.
- Hana-bi won the Golden Lion at the 54th Venice International Film Festival, and Takeshi Kitano said it was not until that win that he was accepted as a serious director in his native Japan, his earlier films having been seen as the hobby of a famous comedian.
