Plot summary
Tsuneo Suzukawa studies at university and earns money at a mah-jong parlor. The regulars there gossip about an elderly woman who takes a pram along the city streets and speculate about what she keeps inside it. One day his boss sends Tsuneo out with the dog, and a pram rolls down a hill and hits a traffic barrier. The woman asks him to look at her granddaughter, and Tsuneo finds Kumiko, a young woman who cannot walk and who calls herself Josee after a character in a book she likes. Josee and her grandmother take him to their home, and her grandmother explains that she takes Josee out in the pram early in the morning because Josee cannot walk, something she hides from the neighbors. Tsuneo keeps visiting, drawn to Josee's strong will, and the two become friends.
