Plot summary
Elisabeth Laurier, a Swiss governess, agrees to bear a child for an unnamed English landowner who will pay off her father's debts. They meet over three nights at a hotel on the coast; both had wished to stay detached, yet a passion grows between them by firelight. Elisabeth bears a daughter and hands the baby to the father, as arranged. She never forgets her child, and in the years apart she fills a journal with watercolor flowers, one page for each birthday. Seven years on, a household on a remote Sussex estate engages her to look after its young girl.
