Plot summary
Owen works as a sound engineer at the student union bar of a Manchester university. A girl he meets there one night leaves in a hurry, giving him only the name Emily and a phone number. The next morning he finds a digit missing from it. His older brother Matt mocks him, and Owen starts looking for her. Emily Raine, an American in her third year of psychology, needs a strong mark on her thesis to keep her visa and secure a job in Manchester. She argues that romantic love amounts to madness, a leftover evolutionary impulse. When Owen comes into her class asking for Emily, she decides he would make an ideal case study. Her professor and her flatmates raise ethical doubts, but she befriends him while pretending to help his search.
