Plot summary
Officer Ryan Taylor is fatally shot in 1989 while a reality show called In the Name of Justice films him. He comes to in 2067, standing in an arena with strangers who are told to fight until one of them is left. Waking in a cell, Ryan meets Isabell on a monitor; she calls herself his handler. In a waiting room he is befriended by Colt, a cowboy who explains that the contestants were pulled from different periods of history and matched at random, each given weapons and armor from his or her own era to entertain viewers. Fischer watches from a control room and punishes a contestant who objects by setting off the explosive implanted in the man. The lottery picks Ryan for a fight, and equipment manager Duke offers him a handgun and a knife.
