Plot summary
April Dibrina, a dancer chasing a career on Broadway, races through a rainstorm to an audition by taking a cab from an older woman. She dances well, but the woman, a sponsor named Ruth Zimmer, recognizes her and promises that no Broadway producer will hire her; while April tries to explain, she knocks Ruth off the stage and the moment circulates on social media. Evicted from her apartment, April goes back to her hometown in Wisconsin, where she runs into Miss Barb, the local dance teacher, and her ex Nick. Barb asks her to coach the town's young dancers for a competition. April turns her down at first, then sees a chance to perform for Welly Wong and takes the job, with a training regimen that pushes the children hard.
