Plot summary
George Banks owns an athletic shoe company, Side Kicks, and lives with his wife Nina and their son Matty. Their daughter Annie returns from a trip through Europe engaged to Bryan MacKenzie, a man she has known for three months. George is not ready to hand her over, and he comes around to the engagement far more slowly than Nina does. George and Nina meet Bryan's wealthy parents, John and Joanna MacKenzie, at their Bel Air mansion, where their dogs cause George trouble. Franck Eggelhoffer, an eccentric European wedding coordinator, then takes over the ceremony, which is to be held at the Banks house with swans and other costly touches.

- Dolly Parton's production company Sandollar Productions purchased the remake rights from Turner Entertainment for $100,000, and Sandollar and TriStar planned to make the film as a vehicle for Jack Nicholson, who would play a grown-up member of the counterculture now entrenched in the middle class.
- Steve Martin, a fan of Baby Boom, brought director Charles Shyer and his wife Nancy Meyers on board. Martin already had a screenplay that he "didn't love" and Shyer found "awful", so the couple significantly rewrote it with Martin and Diane Keaton in their mind.
- Turner still wanted television broadcast rights, so TriStar withdrew. Sandollar approached Disney's Touchstone Pictures, who tapped the studio's finance partner, Touchwood Pacific Partners, to fund the production of the film, and Turner accepted a cable television deal.
- In the United States, Father of the Bride came in second to Hook at the box office during its first week, earning $15 million. It grossed $89.3 million in the United States and Canada and $40 million internationally, for a worldwide gross of $129 million.
