Plot summary
Cassiel and Raphaella are angels in reunified Berlin who hear what the people around them are thinking, and they try to comfort a dying man. Cassiel keeps company with Damiel, a former angel who now runs a pizza parlor called Casa dell'angelo and is married to Marion, a trapeze artist. Cassiel also follows Raissa, an eleven-year-old girl in the former East Berlin, whose mother Hanna is trailed by a detective, Phillip Winter, working for the American arms dealer Anton Baker. Sitting on the Brandenburg Gate, Cassiel tells Raphaella that he wants to experience human life. When he visits Raissa and finds her alone at the balcony railing, she falls and he becomes human, catching the child, with an angel's armor as his only possession.

- Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev appears as himself in a cameo, having never acted in a film before. His appearance was rare for a politician, though Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam and New York Mayor John Lindsay had also appeared in films.
- Otto Sander, who returned as the angel Cassiel, wanted his character to become human, an idea left unresolved in Wings of Desire, and Wim Wenders credited Sander with the idea of Cassiel descending into crime.
- Much of the first three weeks of photography on Faraway, So Close! went unused in the final edit, because of the influence of Wings of Desire and Wim Wenders' aversion to sequels.
