Trailer

Plot summary

The relatives gather for a party in honor of Charlotte, one day older than Gwen and trained for years with Gideon de Villiers, a carrier of the same hereditary gift. Charlotte taunts Gwen about the school ball, and Gideon, whom Gwen likes, has eyes only for Charlotte. Then Charlotte falls ill and Gideon hurries her to the Order of Count Saint Germain, a secret society that hails her as the long-prophesied Ruby and inducts her. Gwen, meanwhile, begins to feel unwell and to see ghosts, and she steps into nineteenth-century London. She confides in her friend Leslie, who works out what has happened, and her mother brings her to the Order as well.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Rubinrot (2013)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • For Gwendolyn's first time jump in Ruby Red, Bayreuth's Ludwigsstraße was dressed as Victorian-era London in April 2012: traffic signs were removed, window bars and historical lanterns added, and period English street signs, adverts, costumed extras, horse-drawn carriages and vintage cars filled the street.
  • The 1942 Christmas sequence, in which Gwendolyn and Gideon sneak into the Order's Observatory, was pieced together from four separate places: producer Felix Fuchssteiner described Gwen and Gideon climbing stairs at Wartburg Castle, standing in the Observatory in Aachen, Gwen falling into a courtyard in Coburg and going through a door in Juelich.
  • Gwendolyn's family home, Montrose House, was inspired by the Neo-Gothic Ketschendorf Castle in Coburg, then a vacant youth hostel, which gave the set designers free rein to decorate its rooms for the years 1994 and 2010.
  • Only Maria Ehrich, Jannis Niewöhner and Laura Berlin travelled to London for the film's four-day shoot in late April 2012, where scenes such as Gwen and Gideon's meeting at Tower Bridge were filmed without barriers and during normal business hours.
