Plot summary
In 1648, after the Thirty Years War, plague and hunger have left the boy Krabat with no family and no food. He finds refuge at a mill whose estate flourishes while the land around it lies plundered, and its old keeper takes him on as an apprentice. Eleven other boys work there, and Krabat befriends Tonda. Besides the craft of milling, the master instructs the boys in dark sorcery. At Easter the apprentices go to the nearby village of Schwarzkollm, where Krabat meets a girl he falls in love with. Tonda warns him that the master must never learn the name of his girl.
