Plot summary
Lena, an 18-year-old pickpocket, lives with her drug-addicted mother in a Berlin high-rise. After she steals a credit card, a police officer named Tom chases her, and she escapes by jumping off a bridge onto a passing boat. That night she goes to a nightclub run by Louise, who singles her out from the line and dances with her. Louise follows her into the bathroom and bites her. Lena runs home terrified, and when morning comes the sun burns her skin and she craves blood. She returns to the club to confront Louise and meets her companions, the silent Charlotte and the cheerful Nora. The three women take Lena into their nights of parties and shopping, and she falls in love with Tom, the officer who chased her.

- Dennis Gansel's vampire script sat in development hell for years: Franka Potente was going to direct, but after her film Creep flopped no one would invest in German horror, and only the success of Twilight and of Gansel's The Wave got it made.
- Karoline Herfurth was shown the script in 2000 but was too young to play Lena, so Dennis Gansel promised her the part of Nora instead; when production was delayed she grew old enough to take the lead.
- Two other endings were filmed, as with Dennis Gansel's earlier film The Wave, but both were discarded so the finished film could end ambiguously.
- The nightclub scenes were shot in an old bathhouse whose pool was unheated, so the actors and extras had to play the scene in the cold.
- Anna Fischer was cast as Nora because producer Christian Becker thought she looked like a party girl, and Jennifer Ulrich auditioned four times before being cast as Charlotte.
- Because the budget was tight and there were not enough shooting days, five cameras were rolling at the same time.
- Composer Heiko Maile was inspired by The Dark Knight's blend of electronic music, orchestra and electric guitar, and used "Au Clair De La Lune" as Charlotte's theme.
