Plot summary

Marcus is a paramedic in Chicago. One night at work he treats Emma Carillo, a woman with five stab wounds, and becomes attached to her; she dies at Mercy Hospital. At the same hospital, a near-death patient, Caroline Kuntz, wakes and kills two people before she leaves. Marcus comes home to find his wife, Carla, with a stranger. He is also suspended over the mistreatment and death of Elizabeth Markham, and Carruthers, a private detective, is assigned to that case. Carruthers interviews Elizabeth's mother, who describes Elizabeth as kind and says she became abusive toward her mother after a brief death. Marcus goes to Emma's funeral and slips into a depression, and he tries to console Carla.
