Plot summary
Maddy Whittier is kept inside her house in suburban Los Angeles by severe combined immunodeficiency, a disorder that leaves her antibodies unable to fight infection. Her mother, a doctor, monitors her health and her daily medication, and only she, the nurse Carla and Carla's daughter Rosa come inside. Maddy spends her days reading, writing book reviews and building models, and she longs to see the ocean. When Olly Bright moves in next door, the two begin texting, and Carla secretly lets him into the house on the condition that he keep his distance. Pauline, who controls everything that comes into the home, forbids her daughter to see Olly again.
