Plot summary
On an isolated desert planet, Lernert crosses a barren landscape, hunting through piles of rubbish for parts that could give Susan a body. Susan is a robot head who does not respond to him, and she rides on the back of his pack. On his way he meets Rola, a determined young woman with almost no survival skills. Rola is looking for an imaginary lake, and the two of them set out together across the harsh desert. They hope a mythical water basin will refill their dwindling supplies and give them a reason to keep going.
