Plot summary
Kannabiran practices law at the Madras High Court and shares a home in Thennaadu with his parents, Aadhirayar and Kosalai. Thennaadu and the neighboring village of Vadanaadu both claim the gods Shiva and Shakti as their own, celebrate that bond at a grand festival, and have long exchanged brides. The suicide of a woman who had moved from Thennaadu to a husband in Vadanaadu sets the two villages against each other. Kannabiran marries Aadhini of Vadanaadu. Aadhini's friend Yazhnila loves Nithin, a henchman of Inba, and Nithin asks her to sleep with one of Inba's business associates. When she tries to run, Inba's men catch her and beat her badly. Kannabiran rescues her and warns Inba and his followers.

- Functionaries of the Pattali Makkal Katchi wrote to cinema-owners' associations in Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts asking them not to screen Etharkkum Thunindhavan; the party's dispute with Suriya dated from his film Jai Bhim, which it said insulted the Vanniyar caste, and it demanded a public apology from him before allowing screenings.
- Filming on Etharkkum Thunindhavan was launched on 15 February 2021 with the cast and crew but without Suriya, who had been diagnosed with COVID-19; the makers shot scenes with the ensemble cast until he recovered and joined the sets on 18 March 2021.
- Pandiraj wrote the story of Etharkkum Thunindhavan, which he based on the 2019 Pollachi sexual assault case; it was his second action-based film after Kathakali, unlike his earlier family-oriented films.
- The Central Board of Film Certification gave Etharkkum Thunindhavan a U/A certificate only after several scenes featuring excessive violence were removed from the film.
- The film was Suriya's first theatrical release in three years: his two previous films, Soorarai Pottru and Jai Bhim, had been assigned direct-to-streaming releases on Amazon Prime Video.
- Carnatic musician Brinda Manickavasakan made her feature-film debut as a playback singer on the song "Ullam Urugudhaiya" in Etharkkum Thunindhavan.
- Filming ended on 10 November 2021 after patchwork scenes were completed, news director Pandiraj shared on Twitter, and afterwards Suriya gifted gold coins to the actors and technicians who had worked on the film.
