Plot summary
Alex Holbeck lives in Paris, where he presents a samizdat radio program for listeners behind the Iron Curtain. Bodley, a CIA agent, recruits him for an assignment in East Berlin: to steal an Enigma code scrambler. The scrambler is wanted as part of an effort to prevent the Christmas Day killing of five Soviet dissidents. Once Alex reaches Berlin, the East German police and the KGB already know he is there. He moves through the city in disguises, escaping repeated attempts to capture him, and turns to his former lover, Karen Reinhardt, for shelter. Her help puts her in danger, so he moves on.

- Michael Lonsdale's dialogue was redubbed by American voice actor Marc Smith, as the director was dissatisfied with Lonsdale's American accent. Lonsdale dubbed his own dialogue for the French version.
- Brigitte Fossey was a last-minute replacement for Lisa Eichhorn in the cast of Enigma, after Eichhorn had to drop out of the production.
