Plot summary
In 1851, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, and her maidservant Zou Zou are crossing the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, bound for a can-can revue in Paris. A slight monetary discrepancy gets the two of them thrown out of an inn, and they take to the road on foot. Dr. Bradley Bradley, a local, comes to their rescue and brings them to Castle Hellsubus, which stands in the hills that rise above the village. The castle is said to be haunted, and it belongs to Count Vladimere Hellsubus, whose household takes in the travelers. Elvira's likeness to the count's deceased former wife does not go unnoticed.
