Plot summary

Mohammed, a security guard, Maureen, a television reporter, her fiancé Don, the comedian George, the recently widowed Jane, Martin, a mutual funds manager, pregnant Celine, and Henry Barton, the building's owner, with his ten-year-old granddaughter Madeline, all board the same New York skyscraper elevator, bound for a company party at the top. George, who fears enclosed spaces, panics, and Madeline stops the car at the forty-ninth floor. Henry presses the lobby button; the elevator drops a few feet and sticks. He calls security, and a maintenance crew is dispatched. While they wait, Jane confronts Henry, saying her husband lost everything when Barton Investments pushed junk bonds. One of the nine is carrying a bomb.
