El analfabeto (1961) on Netflix

Plot summary

An attorney handling an inheritance writes to Inocencio Prieto y Calvo that his uncle has left him two million pesos, claimable by presenting his baptismal certificate. Inocencio cannot read, so the letter tells him nothing, and he mentions to Doña Epifanita, the godmother he lives with, that it may be from someone wanting a loan. At the drugstore, where he means to have the druggist read it to him, he sees that another customer's young daughter can read, and leaves without asking for help. He enrolls at a kindergarten instead, mocked by the children, then quits his job and asks at a bank for work. Leaving the bank he meets Blanca, newly arrived in town, and walks her to her new place of employment, without admitting he cannot read the written address.
