Sara García

Biography

Sara García was a Mexican actress remembered as the granny of Mexican cinema. Her screen career began when Azteca Films, one of Mexico's first production companies, was preparing its first feature, Alma de sacrificio (1917); after taking tests she was offered a contract, and its star was Mimí Derba, a stage actress who had turned to producing and writing. Her early movie work steered her toward the stage, and she appeared in just one film between 1918 and 1933, coming back in Vuelo de la muerte (1933) and then accumulating 148 films. Mothers and grandmothers became her specialty, a path she took when she removed her teeth for a granny role in Allá en el trópico (1940). She co-starred with much of Mexico's film elite from the 1930s through the 1970s, and television kept her films familiar to later viewers. She died in 1980.
