Plot summary
Ángela Goñi, a lawyer, has two cases open at once. Pili is fifteen and has no parents; Gregorio, a traveling organ grinder, brought her up and now wants her placed in a state-run home. Mili is the daughter of Ricardo Arriaga, a wealthy widower who has neglected her, and her aunt Teresa has raised her. Teresa wants to claim the girl through the courts, and Ricardo's father has begun a custody battle for her. The two young women look remarkably alike.
