Plot summary
Father Damián, the elderly priest of San Jerónimo el Alto, learns that a younger man will take his place. He dreads leaving the parish, first refuses to accept the replacement, then relents. The new priest, Father Sebastián, arrives to a town indifferent to him. Father Damián gives him a cold shoulder, and Damián's sister Sara is especially unwelcoming. Sara's daughter Susana is the only resident who instantly warms to him. Don Silvestre, the town's boss, and his son Marcos also become his enemies. Father Sebastián struggles to adapt to the parish. He offers unconventional counsel and sermons about the townspeople's duties in a modern society, trying to remain true to his Catholic ideals even when his methods are questioned.
