Plot summary
At the start of the First World War, Sir Oliver Lodge appoints Arthur Eddington chief astronomer at Cambridge and sets him to study Albert Einstein's work while defending Isaac Newton. A Quaker, Eddington cannot fight; he misses the train carrying William Marston to the front, lectures in defense of Newton, and takes in the Müller family after saving them from an anti-German mob. In Berlin, Einstein's wife Mileva arrives, finds him involved with his cousin Elsa and leaves. Sickened when Fritz Haber displays poison gas, Einstein turns against the war and declines to put his name to a declaration of German scientists, artists and academics who support it. Because German scientific literature is banned in Britain, Eddington must find another way to test Einstein's ideas about Mercury's orbit, and writes to him.
