Plot summary
Miles and Dominic are brothers who ride the roads after the man who murdered their father. They rob a store, and a shopkeeper puts a bullet through Miles' hand; the brothers kill him. Dominic fashions a bandage for the wound, and they camp in the desert, where Miles questions the mission and Dominic threatens to abandon him. Gunmen catch Miles asleep in the car and announce they mean to kill him and steal it; Dominic comes back and kills all three. In a town, an old man stabs a tire with a knife, and Dominic beats him until Vijah levels a gun at him. She treats Miles' wound and warns them that Doyle, the town's leader, is dangerous and that they should stay in her house. Dominic ignores her.

- Writer-director Chris von Hoffmann said he channelled his anger and frustration into Drifter, intentionally making it as nihilistic and mean-spirited as possible.
- Von Hoffmann met Aria Emory, the film's co-writer and star, on the set of Behaving Badly, and said Emory was always intended to play the lead. The rest of the cast were not auditioned, coming instead from people von Hoffmann had worked with or wanted to work with.
- Drifter began as a concept about two brothers entering a haunted town, but the supernatural element was dropped; von Hoffmann has said U Turn influenced that initial idea while he was brainstorming.
