Plot summary
University student Walter Gilman rents a low-priced room in an aging boarding house. Screams from the next room send him to Frances, who says a huge rat chased her; the manager refuses to assist. Another tenant, Masurewicz, asks whether the animal had a human face, says the house is evil, and warns that a witch is coming for Walter. He also says he took the same room as a young man and remains there to pray against her, and offers a crucifix that Walter turns down. Frances needs money to keep her room, and Walter lends it to her. When she goes to a job interview, she asks him to watch her son Danny, who wears a large crucifix.
