Plot summary
In 1892 London the Doctor has withdrawn from saving anyone, living in the clouds while his allies Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint and Strax keep visitors away. A barmaid named Clara Oswin Oswald meets him, and snow that thinks for itself shapes into snowmen around them. Clara also works as a governess for Digby and Francesca Latimer; their previous governess died, and the pond on the estate stays frozen while everything else thaws. Clara is given one word to interest the Doctor with and chooses the word pond. Dr. Simeon, controlled since boyhood by the Great Intelligence, is tied to the snowmen. The Doctor, drawn by the word, goes to the Latimer house to see the pond.

- Jenna-Louise Coleman was cast as Clara partly because of her chemistry with Matt Smith and because she could talk faster than he could. She had auditioned for Clara, not for Oswin in "Asylum of the Daleks"; Moffat only conceived of the two being the same person while casting Clara.
- "The Snowmen" brought in a new title sequence that briefly showed the Doctor's face, the first time since "Survival", the final serial of the classic series in 1989, that his face had appeared in the titles.
- Writer Steven Moffat traced the idea of a retired Doctor back to a plot proposed by Douglas Adams in the 1970s, which the Doctor Who production team rejected at the time.
- Director Saul Metzstein found the first snowmen too "cute", likening them to Zippy from "Rainbow", so the effects team replaced that look with more menacing CGI faces.
- Clara's introduction to the TARDIS used two effects new to the show: a single-shot camera tracking from a few feet outside the TARDIS to its interior, then a complete circle around the console, not seen since the programme's early days.
- "The Snowmen" was the first Doctor Who Christmas special to be filmed in BBC Wales' new Roath Lock studios, after its read-through on 2 August 2012.
