Plot summary

Lauren Curran has bipolar disorder, and after a home invasion that injured her, her baby drowned in the bathtub. She and her husband Russell want a safe home, so they move into a high-tech smart apartment an hour from Portland. At a cocktail party they meet their wealthy neighbors, among them Phillip Starks, heir to a marketing company that studies consumer psychology. Lauren hears strange noises from the apartment's sound system and sees odd pictures and words flash on the television. Russell blames her bipolar disorder and secretly installs cameras to watch her. Online, she reaches Vernon Sarsfield, a hacker and journalist who says she is not imagining things: the building's owners are using the residents as involuntary subjects for subliminal stimuli, and her condition is why she notices them.
