Plot summary

At a fossil site called Tanis in North Dakota, paleontologist Robert DePalma examines creatures that died on the last day of the Cretaceous period. The site lies in the Hell Creek Formation and holds fossils from the years before an asteroid struck Earth 65.5 million years ago. Some fish fossils contain tiny glass spherules in their gills, and a piece of amber includes a rock fragment with metals that match the asteroid. These clues let researchers reconstruct the impact and the first minutes after it, when seismic waves and a surge of water reached Tanis. The evidence points to an asteroid larger than Mount Everest that triggered the extinction of the dinosaurs.
