Astrid Allwyn
Biography
Astrid Allwyn was an American stage and film actress who was born in South Manchester, Connecticut, and raised largely in Springfield, Massachusetts. At thirteen she sang in a concert well enough to be invited to study at the Boston Conservatory of Music, an offer she declined rather than leave home. She finished school, went to New York in the hope of singing professionally, and instead worked as a typist on Wall Street before taking up dancing and dramatics and joining a stock company. In 1929 she made her Broadway debut in Elmer Rice's Street Scene, and her performance in Once in a Lifetime led to screen work and a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. She became known for playing the woman a male star escaped from, among them Charles Boyer's fiancee in Love Affair (1939) and James Stewart's mentor's daughter in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939). She died in 1978.
