Plot summary
Grace moves from New York to rural Montana with her partner Jackson, who has inherited the house his uncle left him, and their baby boy is born soon after they settle in. The two of them are playful at first in their new surroundings. Then Jackson's work takes him away for long stretches, and Grace is left alone with the baby in a remote place, bored, lonely, and struggling to maintain her sanity. Jackson brings home an untrained dog that barks constantly, without discussing it with her first. Her family gives her surprising leeway for her increasingly erratic behavior, and the fighting between the two of them continues.

- Martin Scorsese read Ariana Harwicz's 2012 novel in a book club with other filmmakers and sent it to Excellent Cadaver, the company run by Jennifer Lawrence and Justine Ciarrochi, imagining an adaptation with Lawrence in the lead.
- Lynne Ramsay was going to pass on directing the film because she had already made We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011), which explored similar postpartum themes, and she offered Jennifer Lawrence a different project instead. Lawrence turned it down and insisted on Die My Love, so Ramsay agreed.
- Robert Pattinson was so nervous about a dance sequence that he took dancing classes, and he could not persuade Lynne Ramsay or Jennifer Lawrence to cut the scene or choreograph it.
- Robert Pattinson said that for one scene with three or four pages of dialogue, Lynne Ramsay turned up and decided to shoot it with no dialogue at all, describing the set as "quite an unusual environment".
- Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey burned lenses and singed the camera gate during production to create what Jennifer Lawrence called the film's distinctive "inky look".
- Jennifer Lawrence was four-and-a-half months pregnant at the start of filming; she said her hormones helped her play the character's postpartum imbalance, and that feeling great was the only way she could dip into that emotion.
- Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey shot Die My Love on 35mm film in the 1.33:1 Academy ratio, inspired by Roman Polanski's Repulsion (1965) and Rosemary's Baby (1968).
- Mubi acquired the rights for North and Latin America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, the Benelux, Turkey, India, Australia and New Zealand for $24 million, their largest acquisition to date, with a 45-day release on 1,500 US screens.
