Plot summary
In 2015, seventeen-year-old Elise undergoes a rite for the dead inside the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints. When the name Larue is called out, a malevolent force breaks the ceremony apart, and the sect excommunicates her. Ten years later she has blackouts and harms herself, and her psychiatrist advises exposure therapy rather than hospitalization. She travels to Haventon, Utah, the abandoned FLDS settlement, with Adam, her partner, and Gwen, her friend. There Alma, an elder of the sect, and her son Hyrum hold a rite that uses a Datura brew, and in it Elise confronts Larue, a witch from the nineteenth century who was erased from Mormon history.
