Charles King

Biography

Charles King was an actor whose screen work began in childhood, and while still a teenager he took a role in The Birth of a Nation (1915). He appeared in a variety of silent films and made comedy shorts for Universal in the 1920s, but he became best known as a villain in sound westerns. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, his jowly face, Texas accent, beady eyes and bulky frame made him a familiar heavy to B western audiences, especially in low-budget PRC Pictures releases. He sometimes headed an outlaw gang, though he was more often a hired gun. His characters were constantly eliminated by the heroes, whether shot, beaten, run down, thrown from cliffs or blown up; among those who did away with him on screen were John Wayne and Buck Jones. He stopped making films in 1957 and died that same year.
