Plot summary
Dick lives in Electric Park, a mining town in West Virginia, and calls himself a pacifist. He buys a gun he believes is a toy, and a co-worker tells him it is a genuine antique. The two become friends over target practice. Other teenagers join them, and the group takes the name the Dandies. They give their guns names and shoot at targets in an abandoned mine shaft they call the Temple. They carry the guns always but never display them in public. Dick grows attached to his own gun, names it Wendy and writes it love letters.
