Plot summary
For his thesis, Eric Rainer argues that UFO sightings and alien encounters are modern mythology, stories invented for events people cannot explain. His girlfriend Lisa is tired of the subject and ends their relationship. That night he dreams of being abducted, and the next morning Lisa is missing. A woman named Beth introduces herself as the niece of Harold, his neighbor, and tells him her boyfriend Josh Donald vanished in much the same way. She presses Eric to take the aliens seriously, and his professor, Dr. Connell, responds to his questions with alarm. Beth brings him accounts of beings that change shape and people who seem to be taken over, while Eric tries to find out what became of Lisa.
